Remembering:
Frances Bernard, age 88, of DeTour Village, Michigan, died Thursday, May 14, 2015 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Frances was born May 9, 1927 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Pelligrino Barcelli and Mary (Costrini) Barcelli.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 20, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM with funeral services to begin at 1:00 PM at R. Galer Funeral Home, 24549 S. M-129 in Pickford, Michigan. Final resting place will be at Oaklawn Chapel Gardens, in Bruce Township, Michigan.

🌿 SPRING REMINDER! 🌿Blastomycosis (Blastos) is a fungal infection that easily infects dogs and humans in the Upper Peninsula, but most people don’t even know it exists. Or that Drummond, along with many areas across the EUP are considered “hot spots” for Blastomycosis. 🌿How can you protect yourself from contracting Blastomycosis?* Wear a disposable NIOSH H100 approved hepa filter dust mask (available at your local home improvement store), gloves, proper footwear, long pants and a long sleeve shirt when working in moist areas, or digging in soil were fungus may grow such as crawl spaces, under porches, sheds etc.* If you have an organ transplant, cancer, HIV/AIDS, or are otherwise immune-suppressed, discuss with your physician regarding the advisability of avoiding activities that involve close contact with the soil in areas suspected to have Blastomycosis present.* Avoid allowing piles of rotten wood to accumulate under, or in close proximity to, your home or camp.🌿How can you protect your dog(s)? * Since it’s impossible to keep a dog inside at all times the best thing to do is just be aware that blasto is out there and try to avoid cedar swamps, newly tilled soil and/or rotten wood. * If you see signs of respiratory trouble or any kind of skin lesion, it’s best to get to the veterinarian’s office as soon as possible — symptoms can take anywhere from 3 to 15 weeks to show up in your dog. 🌿Infographic credit: Marshfield Clinic and the Center for Disease Control

MDHHS, MDARD reminding Michigan families about cinnamon recall due to elevated levels of lead Consumers urged to stop using and throw products awayLANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) are urging Michigan families to stop using some brands of cinnamon found to contain elevated levels of lead.On March 6, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asked six companies whose cinnamon brands were found to contain elevated levels of lead to voluntarily recall the brands. Five of the six companies have issued recalls. This recall applies to the following brands of cinnamon and links to more information about those recalls are included:La Fiesta Brand Ground Cinnamon .87 oz, Recall Information.Marcum Ground Cinnamon 1.5 oz, Recall Information.MK.SWAD Brand Cinnamon Powder in clear 3.5 oz bags, Recall Information.Supreme Tradition Ground Cinnamon 2.25 oz, Recall Information.El Chilar Ground Cinnamon “Canela Molida,” Recall Information.FDA continues to monitor this situation and provides updates about the specific recalled lots and code numbers at bit.ly/FDA-Cinnamon-Alert.FDA has identified several stores where these products might be found, including:Dollar Tree.Family Dollar.Save a Lot.Patel Brothers. Consumers are advised to stop using these brands of cinnamon and throw them away immediately. Because these products have a long shelf life, MDHHS reminds consumers to check their homes for the affected brands and discard them.“There is no safe level of lead in the body for any person, and lead is particularly harmful to pregnant individuals,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, chief medical executive. “If you are concerned about your child’s exposure to lead, please talk to your health care provider about blood lead testing.”The source of contamination for the applesauce pouches and the source of contamination for the six brands of cinnamon that FDA issued a voluntary recall for are not connected. Greetings,The state of Michigan is carrying out a 30-day challenge process to identify all locations in our state without access to high-speed internet. high speed = equivalent to or faster than 100 Mbs down and 100 Mbs up, which I assure you the vast majority of us do not have access to, even with Starlink, especially regarding the upload speed – (Note: Starlink will still remain a viable option moving forward, especially for those the network can’t reach. It will see increases in speed as the hexagonal regional grid de-saturates.)DeTour Area Schools and EUPConnect Collaborative continue to push for all of our region to have secure and reliable broadband connectivity. We’re aware that we still have underserved and unserved areas alike.Beginning on March 25th with a deadline of April 24th, residents can visit the challenge website to look up their home address. From there they’ll be able to assess their connectivity and speed, then submit necessary corrections to the state internet provision map. Anchor institutions, such as schools, hospitals, libraries, and municipalities can also see what is being reported and are encouraged to provide challenges to false information. Incorrect mapping results in less funding for our area. In general, our region has been broadly mis-reported by the ISP’s, who state that the majority of our households have access to speeds at or above 1000 Mbs down and 1000 Mbs up. This, as I’m sure we can all attest to, is most assuredly not the case by any metric, imaginary or otherwise. We must ensure that everyone receives an opportunity to participate in this challenge, so that our collective voices will be heard. This is likely a once in a generation opportunity to update our antiquated, historically disregarded data infrastructure (we’re over 20 years behind the rest of our state), and we simply can’t afford to miss the boat on this one! (pun intended) The website was developed by Merit Network, a trusted statewide nonprofit research network, and has been endorsed by MASB. (The same folks affiliated with the network research study that many of you assisted me with last year) The result of the challenge process will be a final state broadband map that will be used to determine which locations are eligible for funds from the $1.6 billion BEAD program to build/develop internet infrastructure in Michigan. For emphasis: This program is likely the only opportunity we’ll receive in this decade for our region to get all of our students, families, and businesses updated to 21st century-level infrastructural standards, with high-speed (1+ Gigabit, or 1000 Mbs up/down) broadband for as many households and businesses in this region as possible. AG Nessel Re-Issues Data Breach Alert Following AT&T Data BreachLANSING – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is alerting Michigan consumers to a massive data breach affecting millions of current AT&T customers and tens of millions more former account holders nationwide. Nessel wants those whose information may have been compromised in the recent AT&T data breach to know what steps they can take to protect their data from scammers and identity thieves. “If you have ever held an account with AT&T, we strongly recommend you take simple precautions now to protect yourself against this significant breach,” Nessel said. “Obviously, current customers should change their AT&T login credentials immediately and update any other accounts where you use the same or similar passcodes, passwords or security questions, but so too should former customers consider taking these steps. All customers who receive notice should take this seriously, this data is already available on the dark web, which indicates the involvement of fraudsters and criminals.” AT&T disclosed March 30th that customer account information appeared in a large dataset released on the dark web that month, impacting approximately 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and more than 60 million former account holders. According to AT&T, the dataset appears to be from 2019 or earlier and contains information such as Social Security numbers and 4-digit numerical PIN passcodes. Full names, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and AT&T account numbers may have also been compromised. AT&T intends to notify customers via email or letter and encourages current and former customers with questions to visit their website for more information. Michigan law does not require companies to notify the Attorney General’s office of data breaches, and the number of affected Michigan consumers is unknown. Former customers with sensitive data attached to older accounts should take protective measures as outlined in the guidance below now and not await an official notice from AT&T, who may not have accurate or current contact information in their records. The Department of Attorney General’s Data Breaches: What to do Next alert provides consumers with useful information about what kind of information can be accessed during a data breach. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission also has consumer guidance available for creating strong passwords and securing your accounts. “My department has resources available online to help those impacted, and my consumer protection team is ready to assist any Michigan resident who may become a victim of identity theft due to this breach,” Nessel continued. Consumers can protect themselves during a data breach by taking the following actions: Watch out for phishing emails; Strengthen or change your passwords; Do not retain unnecessary data or files; Use multifactor authentication on devices and accounts; Consider locking your credit to prevent unauthorized activity; and Review your credit report often. Take advantage of free weekly credit reports from each of the three main credit reporting agencies: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion by contacting the Annual Credit Report website.
